The Month of April

Since April is the month of my birth, I thought it might be interesting to explore some April trivia that may or may not be trivial.  April is the fourth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of the four with the length of 30 days.  Some of the months are named after Greek/Roman gods, while others are named for an act or placement on the calendar.  "Aprillis" apparently translates to the "second month" in Latin, which is where April originally was in the line-up of the months on the Roman calendar until around 700 BC when January and February were added.  Another Latin explanation of the month's name comes from the word "aperire," meaning "to open," which alludes to the onset of spring and blossoming flowers.

Both the Sweet Pea and the Daisy have been recognized as the "Flower of the Month" and the diamond is the gemstone for the month.

Recognized Days in April

What about April Fools Day?  Before the 1560's, April 1st was New Years Day throughout Europe.  The calendar changed to what we now use, but those who still celebrated New Years Day on April 1 were dubbed "April Fools".  The "fools" were teased and a target for practical jokes.  Some historians believe that the Scottish and French customs of pulling pranks in a way reflect the old ancient feelings of spring.  There are many theories around the world concerning where this holiday came from.   It has also become known in some circles as "National Atheist Day"... taken from the scripture in Ps. 53:1, "The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God."

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day.
